Hello all,

New to this so apologies if an obvious question. I'm borrowing my friend's Porta 02 to do some acoustic guitar recording, however there is a very noticeable buzz when the microphone is plugged in which is discernible when playing back recordings. I'm using a shure sm57 with an XLR cable into a whirlwind little IMP impedance transformer to match the input. I've tried using different power outlets in the house, away from other equipment, and making sure the mic cable is not close to the power cable, but none of this makes a difference - the buzzing is only there when the mic is plugged in (it's the same on both lines, and is there in a noticeable way however I set the trim and input level). I believe this means the problem is isolated to the mic and/or cable I'm using, but they work fine when I'm doing digital recording. Can anyone give any pointers on what's going wrong? Thanks.

Not sure, but could the Whirlwind impedance transformer be the cause? I think back in the golden era of cassette portastudios, no-one used that (the input is designed for mic and line levels), so my first move would be to remove that device and see what happens.

Thanks for your reply. I used the IMP as I only have XLR mics and the Porta 02 only has 1/4" jack inputs. I previously used an XLR to jack adapter cable but this was really quiet (buzz was still there though), so I added the IMP to boost the signal.
