The capstan motor in my Porta Two (standard speed model) seems to have died. First it started running slow, then I went out of the room to make a cup of tea and came back to find that it had stopped altogether with the smell of hot motor in the air
. As a test, I applied 9V from a PP3 battery to the +/– terminals; there was a faint noise but no rotation. This contrasted with the healthy rotation that the same procedure produced in the motor of my backup portastudio (a Porta One).
So, it looks like I need to replace the motor but I am confused about the markings on the outside:
The failed Porta Two motor is marked Sankyo SHW2R-00-1X01A.
My Porta One motor is marked Sankyo BFV2R34 180811-A (and is somewhat larger).
Elsewhere online, I have seen a Porta One motor marked Sankyo SHW2R 00-205A.
The Porta One service manual indicates TEAC part number 5760645900, which may or may not be the same for the Porta Two (I do not have a Porta Two service manual but would be very grateful for a copy).
Are all these motors equivalent? What is the significance of the characters that follow the 'SHW2R' part? Can anyone recommend a modern-day replacement? What is the general specification of the motor?
Many thanks for any help that you can give.
