I'm interesting in being able to use the X8 as a mini mixer for certain situations, or just record more channels simultaneously and would like to be able to make use of inputs 1 and 2. I see that you can disconnect the included condenser mics and connect lavaliere mics to those inputs. What I'm wondering is if you could also connect something like a Shure SM58 to them using a 3.5mm TRS to XLR cable like the following:

I see that those inputs are listed as being powered, which I presume is phantom power, and there's no option to turn that off for those inputs. However, an SM58 shouldn't have any issues with receiving phantom power. From Shure's website: "A dynamic microphone, like the SM58, does not require phantom power because it does not have active electronics inside. Nonetheless, applying phantom power will not damage other microphones in the vast majority of cases."

Thoughts?

I ended up calling TASCAM support. They confirmed that inputs 1 and 2 on the X8 can been used for vocal mics like an SM58 as long as you have the right cable (3.5mm TRS to XLR). He recommended using the other inputs, which I will do by default, but said it's fine to use 1 and 2 also -- my use case is when I play with 2 other musicians we have 3 mics and 3 instruments to plug in and record. Of course the Model 12 works better for this, but I don't always want to bring it along, especially if I won't have power available.

Side note, I confirmed that the X8 records post effects (EQ, reverb, etc.) rather than recording the dry signal before effects. The person I spoke with said he has requested this be changed to act more like the Model 12. Not sure if it'll ever go through in a firmware update, but good to know I'm not the only one who was wondering why effects can be handled post recording instead.

the X8 records post effects

Hm. I'mma sure the design geeks and marketing droids had everything to with that...but I'd agree - that is WHACK. The ability to apply (and adjust to suit) FX AFTER recording is pretty fundamental...JMHO... 🤷‍♀️
