Recorded audio on dr40 sounds noisy

why does it sound like this? This was off of the mic. I've also tried with an external mic plugged in (Shure SM58) and it sounds the same. The input level is below 12. thanks

Tom's on the right track. That 'warbling' sound is characteristic of the mp3 compression being too high. The higher it is, the smaller the file, but the artifacts are worse. Try increasing the mp3 bit rate if possible to 256 or above, or switch to wav format for best quality.

Everyone knows the original post was June 28, 2017 and no responses until last Friday, right?

BTW, agreed that sound is classic tell tale MP3 artifacts. Even if you do 256Kbps compression, if you open, edit and resave the same MP3 a few times, it will gradually get worse until it's like that.
