Yes, either introducing another element or replacing an element (if you don't mix wet and dry signals). Though if that knob wasn't twisted on the DM an alternative knob within the DAW would have been "cursored" so the sum difference may be the same.
But, if that outboard device won't provide a specific sound that I'm after it doesn't get into the mix.
I foresee a list of favourite outboard units for summing / bussing that enhance the DM being discussed......
