Tascam 16x08 routing channels 11+

Maybe it's just me but I can't figure out how to do anything with the back panel inserts on this thing. They do not feed to the headphones so I'm limited to the front 8mic pres and two 1/4" inputs. The interface only shows channels 1-8 in the drop down menus for each output channel, no way to tell these channels to go to headphone mix. Am I missing something? Do I need to only be using channel 1+2 outputs instead of phones (haven't tried this yet, just thought of it)? The manual is pretty much worthless.

It's not just the headphones outs or outputs 1+2, I tried for a while to get anything to register in my DAW or on the control panel for the Tascam coming from the back panel of this thing. I've had it for a few years but only used the mic pres and instrument ins on the front. This is aggravating as all get out. Is this defective hardware or some kind of routing issue I don't understand?
