US4x4 - output separate channels in standalone mode

I recently purchased a us16x8 and want to expand it's inputs by using my older us4x4 as a 4-channel pre, with it's four line outputs connected to the rear panel line inputs of the 16x8. I'm running the 4x4 in standalone mode and using the 16x8 as my A/D interface. I expected that each input on the 4x4 would be directed to the output sharing it's number ( input 1 to output 1, input2 to output 2 etc.), but this in not what happens. Instead, the four inputs are internally mixed and each output gets the same (mixed) signal. Is there any way of hacking this thing so that it works in the manner that I want? Thanks!
