Recording beyond track 10

As long as I've had the original gray 2488 I've never used up even half the available tracks on any one song. I noticed a while back that even when I tried to arm tracks 11 through 24 (understanding that 13 and on are doubled up), the red light doesn't even come on. Is this normal and am I just missing something obvious?
Sorry, I'm not an audio engineer and use this thing for fun, so be easy on me. I'm not sure if this was a problem from the time a bought this in 2006.

I have graduated to the DP24, I recall you are going to need to assign the inputs (1-8) to one/two of the (11-24) tracks. You will need the ASSIGN track step then Ex. assign track 1 to track 13 means what is plugged into track 1 will record on track 13, you will need to arm record light track 13. if my memory is correct
