See if there is an updated driver available for the Adaptec card? Vista Mummmm, I managed to avoid Vista LOL. I still use XP pro in the studio but I have used windows 7 on a home computer and it seems to work OK.
Have a look in the non working slot and see if it has a bent pin? I have had a bent pin on a 68 pin cable in my old days before bay when I had a makeshift tower with a multi connection cable in it (manual plug in and out drive change days) caused all kinds of problems.
