I need Midi capability, but purchased a Tascam DP-24SD, which doesn't.
I would like to get a Tascam DP-24, which does have midi. Does anyone know if I can do a midi track on the Tascam DP-24 and take the SD card out and into the DP-24SD and use the file?

Can you be more specific as to what doing "a MIDI track" is?

Hello mjk. Thank you for your reply. Sorry for the lack of information I provided.

Problem: I was doing a lot of Home recording many years ago. I was heavily into using midi at the time. The last recording rig I used was a Korg D3200. I recently purchased a used Tascam DP-24SD.

A few months ago, I decided to get into recording again and thought that I didn't want to use midi anymore because it added a layer of more technicality. Anyway, I was wrong. I would like to use midi so I can better utilize my Yamaha Genos for its voicing, but more as the "metronome" and drum machine to sync with my Tascam. I use its "Styles" and rhyme tracks extensively. I would also like to use the "In/Out function editing optimally.

Currently, when I record, I press the Genos and the Tascam record as close to the same time as I can. This usually takes 4 or 5 times before it syncs acceptably. A midi track would eliminate this issue. Currently for recording the audio of the Genos for its voicing, I use its audio outs to the Tascam and the metronome on the Tascam.

I was thinking that if I got a Tascam DP-24, I could use the midi to get the drum track timing from the Genos, then import into the DP-24SD to finish the other recording tracks (I didn't want to switch to a different system because I already learned the DP-24SD). As I now think I understand, that would not work as the midi file would still be in midi format, which the DP-24SD wouldn't be able to use. I should have bought a used DP-24, but they are hard to find here, and are either in pretty bad condition or in good condition pretty expensive.

At this time I think I might try a system Phil Tipping recommends -the old Tape syncing method.

Any of your thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks for your time.

Rick

That's all you can do with MIDI on an 'SD.

Whether you use a DP-24 with MIDI, or a DP-24SD with an external sync unit, the DP machine can only act as the master timing source. It's ok handling the start command from the other devices, so they will start in sync, but this is an MMC command which is not the same as timing clocks. This means they may drift out of sync within the song. Depends how lucky you are with each device's internal timing clock; they vary from device to device.

Thank you so much for taking the time to help me understand this. It is greatly appreciated.
Have a good day.
