Tascam DR 40 - problem with recording

Hi everyone, I do apologise for such a beginner question, but I've been following the instructions to the dot and I still can't get a recording from external mic. In record mode I have 'source' set to EXT IN 1/2 and Line Out set to 'LINE'. What am I doing wrong? Thanks so much.
